Matching candidates to jobs with a laptop and a good dose of common sense

Whether you are the human resources manager for a large corporation or the owner of a small business it is likely that at various times some help in finding suitable staff would be much appreciated. Depending on the nature of the work that needs to be carried out, candidates for some positions may need to be vetted more carefully than those for less important roles. There are many sites on the internet where people post their curriculum vitas and advertise their services and these can be useful starting points. A netbook is all you need to look through the sites and send emails off to prospective employees. These diminutive machines are capable of carrying out all the everyday tasks that a lot of people use a mobile computer for so can represent excellent value for money. In your free time it is nice to be able to relax at home watching a good movie and the better your entertainment equipment is the more enjoyable it will be. A modern high definition TV will certainly enhance your viewing pleasure when watching programmes broadcast in this format and the detail and clarity of the picture will be much better than you will experience with a standard definition set. The more successful your business or career is, the more you will have to spend on such luxuries so engaging the services of an experienced recruitment firm can pay dividends in the long run. They can save much time by weeding out unsuitable candidates.

Interview techniques

The use of a DVD player during an interview may not be standard practice but showing interviewees some corporate productions can give them a good idea of the type of company they would be working for and help to relax them for the grilling you will be giving them afterwards. It is important to try and put each candidate at their ease or their true nature will not shine through at the interview. If you will be working late into the night then hopefully you already have a modern DVD recorder at home that you can set to record any programmes that you do not want to miss. They are a breeze to set up and program these days so even technophobes should have no problems with them. When employing people for their observational skills it is a good idea to have some kind of test at the interview so you can assess how they perform under pressure. A short piece of film can be prepared and shown to them using something like an HD TV so that all the detail is clear to see. Then afterwards they can be asked questions on various parts of the film. This will allow you to see if they are able to concentrate on demand and how good their short term memory is. This type of television is also popular for home use as it means that films made in high resolution can be seen in all their glory, as the director intended.

Reviewing the candidates

When seeing many people for one position you can use a digital camcorder, with the candidates' agreement, so that there is a record of how each interview went that can be reviewed at the end of the day. This makes it easier to compare a large number of people and can eliminate any poor judgement that may have arisen at the time due to tiredness on your part, or other factors. It is not too important what type of screen is used to review all the interviews but if there happens to be an LCD TV on the premises then so much the better. As they have flat screens they are easier to watch from a wider variety of angles than is possible with a convex screen. This is one reason why pubs and other entertainment venues adopted them more quickly than many homeowners. Apart from candidates' performance at the actual interview you will also want to review their qualifications and experience as part of the decision-making process and there are many applications that can be installed on most types of notebook and used to organise such information for easy comparison. When your job entails moving around the country it is useful to have all the details to hand on a portable PC, that you need in order to make decisions about things back at head office. Mobile phone networks have data transfer rates which mean you can use a mobile computer pretty much anywhere you find yourself these days.

Appointing the best person for the job

Many companies prefer to develop a consensus on new employees to avoid any personal bias. For a television LCD screens are clearly superior to those on older sets but candidates' abilities are not always as easy to compare. Do not be afraid to ask people back for second or even third interview if you feel it is necessary and the position carries a great deal of responsibility. Apart from giving you more time to evaluate each applicant it will also ensure that only those who truly want the job get through. Once appointed they will need to be issued with equipment like a multimedia laptop or other type of portable machine so that they can do their job properly. The exact nature of the equipment will depend on their daily duties of course. There are not many executive positions that do not require the use of a computer though and ones that are versatile and reasonably powerful make a good choice for running many different types of applications. A lot of people have their own machines already but it is easier to keep track of things if a company laptop is issued, such as whether everybody has the latest version of the software that they need to use or not. Basic computer skills are something that are worth testing at the interview stage as it is easy to say that you can do something but a different proposition when asked to demonstrate your knowledge of a certain piece of software.
